Mr. Wizard Reveals EVO 2013 Lineup

Shoryuken.com founding member Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar took to Wake-Up SRK live last night to let loose what the fighting game community has been waiting for: The official lineup to this year’s Evolution tournament in Las Vegas! The lineup is as follows:

  • Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition ver. 2012
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
  • Mortal Kombat
  • King of Fighters 13
  • Street Fighter x Tekken ver. 2013
  • Persona 4: Arena
  • Player’s Choice (by way of donation)

The game lineup is what most fighting fans expected, save for a few surprises. Super Street Fighter 4: AE 2012 and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are the pillars of any tournament and were a shoe-in. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is the newest big game on the block and has a healthy community. Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters 13 both made huge splashes at last year’s event, and it is great to see them get their due. Street Fighter x Tekken ver 2013 is the surprise pick given its lukewarm reception by the community, but Mr. Wizard noted that the game deserves a second chance now that Capcom has provided a thorough patch. The last official game revealed as Arc System Works’ Persona 4: Arena, which surely excited the anime crowd and incited their hunger to grind it out until July.

There will be an eighth (yes, eighth!) game on the lineup, which is to be voted on by the players. Any game that received over 500 votes in the recent Evolution Facebook poll is eligible, with everything from Capcom vs. SNK 2 to Super Smash Bros. Melee up for voting. To help a good cause while eliminating the threat of cheated votes, the folks at SRK are going to require a donation for every vote, with all proceeds going to breast cancer research. Mr Wizard also noted that the Road to Evo will be much shorter this year, with NorCal Regionals, SoCal regionals, UFGT9, and CEO standing as the only Evo qualifiers before the big day.

How do you feel about these reveals? Did your game of choice make the cut?
